NOTES

Description
The Ottawa Valley Golden Retriever Club is hosting an Avidog workshop (s) with Dr. Gayle Watkins - Avidog's Fit to Be Tied: Conditioning Breeding Dogs and From Research to Real Life: Combining Art and Science to Raise Great Dogs.

The Friday evening session, Fit To Be Tied: Conditioning Breeding Dogs, arose from a joint venture between Dr. Chris Zink DVM Ph.D DACVP and Avidog International. This session will discuss how to evaluate your dog's fitness, which different types of conditioning you should do during each step in the breeding process, and how to develop a balanced, doable exercise program based on your dog's structure and activities in addition to taking into account your own time constraints and physical abilities. Although this seminar is focused on breeding dogs, the analyses and exercises are also appropriate for performance and working dogs. And those of you with boys - conditioning matters for them too, not just the girls!

Saturday and Sunday's workshop, From Research to Real Life: Combining Art and Science to Raise Great Dogs, is a new seminar that Gayle is developing just for us. Gayle will start from the very beginning - when the breeding is just an idea on paper, and will focus on how to optimize your breeding success. She will cover such topics as epigenetics, pedigree analysis, breeding stock selection decisions, nutrition, the mating and the whelping itself. She will bring us the latest research and help us to translate the science into how it can be applied in an easy, practical manner. Of course, it wouldn't be an Avidog seminar if we didn't spend some time exploring the fabulous methods Avidog has developed on rearing puppies throughout the key stages in their development, as well as how to ease the transition of the pup to their new home.
