| Jeffrey (Jeff) Kestner is a native Ohio, the last of the Baby Boomer generation. He earned a bachelor’s and
master’s degree in education, and taught in elementary schools for 13 years. The opportunity to help other
school employees led him to a career with the Ohio Education Association, the largest public employee union
in the state. Representing and advocating for teachers and school employees for over 27 years, he retired
from OEA in 2023. Jeff's introduction into the sport of purebred dogs began upon meeting his future husband, Jeff Bazell, in 2004. Bazell is a long-time breeder, exhibitor, and conformation judge. The two worked together to improve the quality and health of their Brussels Griffons. Using the registered kennel name St Johns, they bred and finished dozens of group, specialty and best in show winning dogs. Decades of collecting and research about the Brussels Griffon breed culminated in the 2023 publication of The Definitive Brussels Griffon, and 650-page book authored by Kestner and Bazell. For the first National Brussels Griffon Club of Canada's national specialty in 2023, St Johns traveled to Ontario and showed several of their Griffons. Kestner's exhibit, Am Ch St Johns Pull Up Your Big Girl Pants "Britches" won Best of Breed and Best of Winners. In 2018 while traveling in the UK, they fell in love with the Lancashire Heeler breed, and have imported several from Wales, Sweden and Denmark. After the breed gained full recognition by the American Kennel Club in 2024, they proudly showed their dogs to the following awards: 1st AKC Champion Dog, 1st AKC Champion Bitch, 1st Bred-by Champion, and 1st Group Placing Lancashire Heeler. Kestner began his conformation judging career in 2016, specializing in Toy and Non-Sporting breeds. Jeff is the father of three sons and five grandchildren. |
